About Me

Matthew B. Lawhon, J.D. is a seasoned criminal defense attorney with extensive experience in health care compliance and law enforcement. For over a decade Matthew was a health care fraud and abuse investigator with hundreds of cases under his belt at the federal and state levels. During that time Matthew spent five years as a Senior Investigator for the Medicare Benefits Integrity Contractor in Texas (Now UPIC), and eight years as a Criminal Investigator for the Texas Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU).

Matthews unique insights over health care regulatory or investigative authorities developed into techniques unique to him in the areas of defensive law for health care providers. He then used his knowledge to counsel pharmacies, laboratories, chiropractors, physician groups, home health agencies, and other healthcare providers.

From 2018-2022 he was the Owner/Founding Attorney of M B Lawhon Law Firm PLLC, where he advised clients on a broad range of health care compliance topics, including health care billing, health care related statutes such as stark law and the anti-kickback statute, FDA 510(k) approval, and device marketing.

His legal career also includes roles as Associate General Counsel Regulatory & Compliance for Avellino Labs USA, Inc., where he conducted internal audits, coordinated compliance activities, worked with stakeholders, drafted Avellino response to requests, and conducted staff training to on the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law, Health Care Fraud, EKRA, HIPAA, and related state statues.

Prior to his career as an attorney and in health care, Matthew served Texans as a Dallas police officer assigned to the Central Patrol Division, in the areas of East and South Dallas.

Matthew earned his Juris Doctor from Texas A&M University School of Law and his Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice from Southern Methodist University. He is admitted to practice law in the state of Texas.
