Scams targeting healthcare providers are becoming more sophisticated in their phishing and other fraudulent actions, putting countless doctors, dentists, nurses, and others at risk.
Chapman Law Group, one of the nation’s leading firms representing licensed healthcare professionals, is regularly notified about such attempts, but more recent ones have appeared to be realistic to the naked eye. These fraudulent acts go as far as threatening license suspension, referencing actual laws, inventing investigation numbers, and utilizing the names of actual leaders in such organizations as the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and the Michigan Board of Medicine.
“Some providers may be apt to fall for the scam, especially since some bad actors will go as far as replicating departmental letterhead”, said Chapman Law Group Senior Attorney Aaron J. Kemp.
“We see a few of these a year which means there are thousands of phishing scams targeting healthcare providers,” Kemp says. “Our team can help identify these fraudulent attempts but without legal counsel, they can be difficult to spot.”
Furthermore, these bad actors already have access to a provider’s contact information and may even directly call a doctor’s office to escalate the fraudulent act. Kemp, who also serves as Chapman’s Chairperson of Professional Licensing & Regulatory Affairs in Michigan, says that providers can recognize a fraudulent licensing threat by knowing common scam tactics, such as urgent demands for payment, requests for personal information over the phone, and threats of license revocation or arrest.
“You’ll want to be skeptical of calls claiming to be from government agencies that are well known, like your state licensing and regulatory department and medical boards,” Kemp said. “The more urgent that a communication seems, the more cautious a provider should be. You NEVER want to provide any personal information to someone you can’t 100 percent confirm is legitimate.”
