South Florida Task Force to Investigate and Prosecute COVID-19 Federal Health Care Fraud

Healthcare Administrator Signing a Contract

In response to the increasing threat of fraud related to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida has created a COVID-19 Task Force. This unit will identify, investigate and aggressively prosecute fraud related to COVID-19 in all of South Florida — including Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

Coronavirus Hoarding, Price Gouging, Elderly Exploitation, Fake Cures

While the Task Force will review and investigate all credible leads of COVID-19 fraud, it will focus on complaints of hoarding and price gouging of critical medical supplies necessary to respond to the pandemic including respirator masks, ventilators, and other medical protective equipment.

The Task Force will also investigate schemes designed to exploit vulnerable populations — including the elderly — as well as plots that have the potential to endanger public health and safety.

Additionally, the Task Force will be aggressively investigating complaints of health care fraud relating to at-home test kits, offers to sell fake cures, vaccines, and advice on unproven treatments for COVID-19.
